On March 6th 2017 Atlanta’s new Swedish Choir “Sounds of Sweden” met to rehearse for the first time. Two weeks later, after the choir members had the opportunity to suggest a name for the choir and thereafter voted for the best name, the winning name was announced. It showed to be “Sounds of Sweden”. The occasion was celebrated with a glass of champagne.
The idea of creating a Swedish mixed choir in Atlanta came up in the fall of 2016. For many years we have had a great Lucia choir here, consisting of ladies from SWEA/Atlanta and Vasa Drängar. After a poll among the Lucia choir singers it was evident that there was a great interest in singing more than just once a year at the Lucia concert. So, as a result the “Sounds of Sweden” were born – starting with almost 20 singers.
Our first performance happened at a “Vårgudstjänst på svenska” (Spring Service in Swedish) on March 25th in Atlanta. Swedish vicar Michael Franzén of the Church of Sweden Abroad came from Florida with his wife, deacon Susanne Franzén and together they led this Swedish service. About 40 people attended to this event that included a lot of music. Now the “Sounds of Sweden” had its World Première. This new and euphonious choir sang “Vintern rasat ut”, “Nu grönskar det” and “Glad såsom fågeln”, followed by powerful applause. Afterwards the choir got the question “When can we buy your CD?” The answer was: ”Well, can you wait a few months or so?” With emphasis on “or so”.
After the service SWEA (who arranged this event with Nordic Lodge) served delicious Swedish waffles and coffee. After all, today was the Våffeldagen!
Sounds of Sweden’s next performance will be at the
Valborgsmässoafton celebration on April 29th, at Lake Alltoona, GA. For more information contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
